Day 1 of the 9 Days Rwanda Primate Tour & Wildlife Safari in Rwanda: Visit the Gisozi genocide memorial in Kigali & transfer to Akagera National Park

Following breakfast at your place of stay in   Kigali, you are picked by the driver guide to embark on the tour of the Gisozi genocide memorial – the main genocide Museum in Kigali. The tour to the Museum allows you to explore into the tragic past that befell Rwanda in the year 1994. The ethnic conflict between the Hutu and the Tutsi has started earlier in the 1959 and series of events had been happening until their climax in 1994 where over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus lost their lives.   The Museum details the causes and effects of this tragic event that will never be forgotten in the History of Rwanda. Retreat from the tour, settle for lunch in Kigali after which you embark on the drive to Akagera National Park 135km about 3 hours drive. You explore the amazing sceneries of Rwandan countryside and the possible sights of Inyambo cows at Rwamagana before checking in at the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 2 of the 9 Days Rwanda Primate Tour & Wildlife Safari in Rwanda: Do morning game drive in the savannah stretches of Akagera & afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema

The rolling savannah landscapes of Akagera National Park is the only habitat of its kind in Rwanda with a myriad of wild game suitable to be explored on a safari like this. The early morning drive through the park presents opportunity to explore the range of species including elephants, Masaai Giraffe, Buffaloes, Topis, Roan Antelopes, leopards, Lions, waterbucks among others. The wild game viewing encounter lasts 3 – 4 hours after which you retreat to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you embark on the boat cruise on Lake Ihema.  The Akagera National Park features the most extensive protected wetland system in central Africa.  Lake Ihema one of the lakes in the park presents the likely views of Nile Crocodiles, Hippopotamus and water birds. Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park after breakfast. You drive though Kigali city and proceed to make a stop at Nyanza Palace which is the Royal palace of the Kingdom of Rwanda established by King Musinga and later his successor King Rudahigwa. The palace also features an ancient architectural hut along with the traditional Inyambo cows and the King’s equipment. The traditional performance can be arranged for you on optional arrangement. You proceed to Butare for lunch after which you embark on the tour to the Ethnographic Museum also known as the National Institute of Rwandan Museums which features a range of 100,000 artifacts becoming the largest in Rwanda if not in the region of East Africa.  The Museum depicts the heritage and history of Rwanda. You proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, gather at the Headquarters of Nyungwe Forest National Park for Chimpanzee trekking experience. The briefing commences at 8am after which you set out to the forest in search of these precious apes. The trek can last 2 – 5 hours and the direct viewing is limited to one hour for purposes of conservation.The trek through the moist deciduous forest of Nyungwe presents a lovely encounter with lush flora, impressive bird species, forest fauna before encountering the Chimpanzees as they forage, copulate, patrol, socialize among other interesting aspects. The forest is also a home to other 12 species of Primate including the largest grouping of Black and White Colobus Monkeys in Africa. Retire for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you embark on the Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk which is the first of its kind in the region of East Africa stretching to 40m and over 90m high presenting magnificent views of the forest   and its inhabitants. The walk can last for 2 hours after which you retreat to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Following a relaxed breakfast amidst the fresh air from the moist deciduous forest of Nyungwe, you embark on the transfer to Gisenyi Lake Kivu 294km about 7 hours’ drive exploring the magical views of the Nile Congo divide trail. You make a lunch stop at Kibuye one of the resort towns on Lake Kivu after which you proceed to Gisenyi arriving in the afternoon for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Gather at Kinigi ranger post to catch up with briefing commencing at 8am. The early arrival allows you to catch up with a warm cup of coffee as you watch the traditional Kinyarwanda performance going on.  Attend to the briefing by the Park rangers in your respective gorilla families allocated to you after which you embark on the hike in the jungle in search of the endangered Mountain Gorilla. The walk in the Volcanic dense jungle is accompanied by beautiful sights of lovely flora, unique sceneries including the eight Virunga mountain chain and the lakes below, the forest fauna including duikers, birds before approaching the critically endangered mountain gorillas that have thrived in the area for millions of years past. Explore the gentle giants foraging on their precious shrubs and other edibles, socialize, the silver back demonstrating its might, the young ones play among other interesting aspects. The entire trek takes 2 – 8 hours with direct viewing limited to one hour for purposes of conservation. The opportunity is availed to you to take as many photos as possible commemorating your lifetime gorilla safari experience. You retreat from the experience and spend an evening relaxing at the lodge refreshing the gorilla safari memories.

Day 8 of the 9 Days Primate and Wildlife Safari in Rwanda: Do golden monkey tracking in the morning & afternoon tour to the Musaze Caves

Following breakfast at the lodge, you gather at Kinigi Headquarters again but this time for golden monkey tracking. The encounter commences at 7am with briefing after which you set out to the forest in search of these endangered ape species. The golden monkeys are known to be thriving in the Virunga massif and Gishwati Forest National Park in the while world, therefore exploring them in their natural habitats is a maiden opportunity to appreciate their beauty and henceforth contribute to their conservation. You explore the golden monkeys as they leap from branch to branch, tree to tree, make their interesting chatters with the views of their golden patches. These species thrive in the Bamboo zone on the foot hills of Mount Sabyinyo which is also an interesting terrain to explore. The activity lasts about 4 hours after which you will return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you embark on the exploration of Musaze Caves one of the historical caves of Rwanda. The Musaze Caves date far back to 65 million years ago from the lava flow from the Volcanic Mountains of Bisoke and Sabyinyo mountains. The Musaze caves stretch to 2km inside featuring 31 cave entrances and a huge bat colony on the cave roof. You are accompanied by an armed army personnel and the walk would last about 2 hours.  Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 9 of the 9 Days Primate and Wildlife Safari in Rwanda: Hike to the Dian Fossey site and drive back to Kigali

Following breakfast at your lodge, you embark on the last activity of your trip–the Dian Fossey hike. It would be profoundly incomplete to explore the Gorilla trekking safari trail of Rwanda without reaching the site of Dian Fossey and pay tribute to her remarkable work in the world of gorilla conservation.Dian Fossey was an American Primatologist who sacrificed the home luxuries and immersed herself fully in the mountain gorilla research and conservation in the Virunga Mountains till her final demise in 1985. The site named Karisoke is positioned in between Mount Karisimbi and Bisoke thus the naming and takes about 4 hours to explore. After the activity, you embark on the drive back to Kigali 116km about 2 – 3 hours drive marking the end of the tour
