3 Days Rwanda Chimpanzee Trekking Safari Nyungwe Forest National Park – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Make a stop at Nyanza Palace and at Ethnographic Museum in Butare En-route For Culture and Heritage Experience

Following breakfast in Kigali (own arrangement), you embark on the drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park 268km about 6 hours drive.

The drive through the scenic country side in the south of Rwanda is magical and rewarding. You make a stop at Nyanza to visit the Rukaari also referred to as the Royal palace to explore the site of the ancient Kingdom of Rwanda where the last two Kings are known to have lived namely King Musinga and his Son King Rudahigwa.

You explore the traditional hut, the art and craft and the traditional Inyambo cows which can also arrange a parade.

Proceed on the drive to Butare where you will settle for lunch and tour the Ethnographic Museum – the largest Museum in Rwanda with over 100,000 collections detailing the history and heritage of Rwanda. Proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park arriving for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Do Chimpanzee Trekking in The Morning & Afternoon Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk

After breakfast, gather at the Headquarters of Nyungwe Forest National Park for Chimpanzee trekking experience.

The briefing commences at 8am after which you set out to the forest in search of these precious apes. The trek can last 2 – 5 hours and the direct viewing is limited to one hour for purposes of conservation.

The trek through the moist deciduous forest of Nyungwe presents a lovely encounter with lush flora, impressive bird species, forest fauna before encountering the Chimpanzees as they forage, copulate, patrol, socialize among other interesting aspects.

The forest is also a home to other 12 species of Primate including the largest grouping of Black and White Colobus Monkeys in Africa.

Retire for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you embark on the Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk which is the first of its kind in the region of East Africa stretching to 40m and over 90m high presenting magnificent views of the forest and its inhabitants.

The walk can last for 2 hours after which you retreat to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 3: Do Black & White Colobus Monkey Tracking And Transfer Back to Kigali

After breakfast, you gather at the park headquarters to embark on the Black and White Colobus Monkey tracking.

The Forest of Nyungwe features the largest grouping of these species in the whole of Africa with over 400 of them known to be living together.

The sight of these species in their black and white coats with their young ones in white coat is magical. It is rewarding to explore them jump from tree to tree and from branch to branch.

The trek can last for 4 hours after which you embark on the transfer to Kigali.
