UWA ANNOUNCES NEW GORILLA GROUPS, GOLDEN CAT TRACKING & IMPROVED PAYMENT SYSTEM

12 Days Combined Uganda Safari Tour & Rwanda Gorilla Safari Tour With Wildlife Adventure

If you’re planning gorilla trekking in Uganda or putting together a wildlife safari, there are a few key updates you’ll want to know.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has rolled out changes that make booking permits easier and add a unique new wildlife activity to Uganda’s line-up.

The updates include new habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, golden cat tracking in Kibale National Park, and a more efficient way to handle payments at UWA headquarters.

UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi announced these changes on April 14, 2026.

Overview of the Latest UWA Changes

Here’s what’s new:

  • A more efficient, transparent payment system at UWA headquarters
  • Two newly habituated gorilla groups now open for trekking
  • Golden cat tracking introduced in Kibale Forest National Park

These changes are meant to simplify your Uganda safari planning while giving you more to do once you’re here.

New Payment System at UWA Headquarters

UWA has upgraded its payment process with a new Inplant Machine at the Reservations Office in Kampala. All cash payments for permits and other services now go through this system.

A few things to note:

  • The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Payments take about 24 hours to show up in the system
  • Once the bank confirms payment, your booking is processed right away

The new system cuts down on delays and keeps things more organized. Just make sure you and your tour operator allow enough time for payments to clear.

Two New Gorilla Families in Bwindi

Uganda’s gorilla trekking just got a boost. Two new habituated gorilla groups have officially joined the trekking program in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:

  • Happy Group in the Buhoma sector
  • Nshanjare Group in the Rushaga sector

They’re now part of the standard UWA booking system. That means permits follow the usual daily limits — there aren’t “extra” permits outside the set quota.

What this means for you:

  • Slightly more gorilla trekking permits available
  • Easier to check permit availability through official channels
  • You still need to book early — demand is high

Even with the new groups, gorilla trekking is incredibly popular, so locking in your permit ahead of time is still a must.

Golden Cat Tracking Now Available in Kibale

For travelers who want something rare and off the beaten path, UWA has launched golden cat tracking in Kibale National Park.

The activity runs in the Kanyanchu area along Ngogo Road and gives you a chance to track the African golden cat — one of the most elusive and rarely seen animals on the continent.

Booking and details:

  • Reservations are made on the ground only for now, not online
  • Book at least 24–48 hours in advance
  • The experience costs $350 per person and covers a five-day tracking window
  • You’ll need to bring your own guide; UWA provides ranger support

It’s a quiet, specialized activity ideal for wildlife lovers, photographers, or anyone after a deeper, less crowded experience in nature.

Why These Updates Matter

These changes show UWA’s focus on improving the visitor experience while protecting Uganda’s wildlife.

By streamlining bookings and adding new activities, Uganda keeps strengthening its place as one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations.

Whether you’re hiking through Bwindi’s forests to see mountain gorillas or exploring Kibale for rare species, the updates make your trip smoother and more rewarding.

Tips to Help You Plan

  • Secure your gorilla trekking permits well in advance through UWA or a trusted tour operator
  • Remember the 24-hour processing time for payments when you make reservations
  • Set up golden cat tracking early through your lodge or safari provider
