The new Nile bridge now called the “The source of Nile bridge” is strategically located at Njeru, a suburb of Jinja across the Lake Victoria Nile, between the source of the Nile to the south and Nalubaale Power Station (old bridge) to the north.
The Source of the Nile bridge is close to where the Uganda Railways line crosses the Victoria Nile.
The New bridge is comfortably set on the proposed Kampala–Jinja Expressway, approximately 82 kilometers (51 mi), by road, east of Kampala along the Kampala-Jinja highway.
The old bridge, was commissioned in 1954, is in bad structural shape and has outlived its expected lifespan that’s why the new bridge has been constructed.
This new bridge is expected to have a life span of 120 years and will carry a four-lane dual highway with pedestrian sidewalks.
The source of the Nile bridge was started in early January 2014 and it is longest bridge in Uganda with 525 metres (1,722 ft) long and 22.9 metres (75 ft) wide as reported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The 525meter long cable-stayed bridge is the fifth longest and one of its kind in Africa after Egypt’s Suez Canal Bridge (3,900), Lekki Ikoyi Bridge in Nigeria (1,360m), Tanzania’s 680meter-long Kigamboni Bridge, and Mohammed VI Bridge in Morocco (950m).
The new bridge is yet another government milestone in infrastructural development. During celebrations to mark the 56th Uganda’s Independence Anniversary in Kyotera last week, President Yoweri Museveni boasted that over 7000kilometers of roads in the country are currently under tarmac, compared to only about 800kilometers in 1986.
Today, 17th October 2018, as the New source of the Nile bridge is being commissioned by HE Kaguta Museveni, it was illuminated in the colors of the Uganda Flag; Black Yellow Red. Other than becoming the second gateway to the Eastern part of Uganda after the Owen Falls Bridge, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) believes the new bridge has the ability to become a major tourist attraction for people on safaris in Uganda because of its spectacular shape.
