Mikumi National park is crossed by the Tanzania’s A-7 highway and is found near Morogoro, Tanzania. The park is the fourth largest National park in the country spanning over an area of 3,230km² and is bordered to the South with Selous Game Reserve the two areas forming a unique ecosystem and the other areas bordering the park include the Uluguru Mountains and Udzungwa Mountains. Belonging to the circuit of the wildlife parks of Tanzania it is less visited by international tourists and protected better from the environmental point of view and most of the routes do proceed in the direction of the Selous and Ruaha National park. Mikumi also has a social history and Stanley Kopje lies on one of the Slave routes, also used by Henry Morton Stanley  The best park’s recommended seasons for visiting it is in the dry seasons between May and November and the warm weather with beautiful sites that are a once in a lifetime experience.
Mikumi National park was gazetted in the year of 1964 covering an area of 1070 square kilometers and later in the year of 1975 the park was extended to the current area of 3,230 square kilometers. The park lies just to the North of the famous Selous Game Reserve and is the fifth largest National park in the country of Tanzania. The park shares the name Mikumi with the village just beyond its western border of the Dar es Salaam Iringa highway that traverse the park for 50 kilometers and the palm tree “Borassus spp” from which the small town takes the name, once grew there in profusion but no stem is visible in the village.

Mikumi’s land scape is often compared to that of Serengeti and the road that crosses the park divides it into two areas with partially distinct environments. North west area is characterized by the alluvial plain of the Mkata river basin and the area consists of savannah dotted with baobab, acacia, tamarinds and some rare palm vegetation. In this area there are spectacular rock formations of the mountains Uluguru and Rubeho at the furthest from the road and to the Southeast part of the park is not very accessible and less rich in wildlife.

The area has high concentrations has high concentrations of game with large herds of Nyasa Blue wildebeest, a subspecies of giraffe that biologists consider the link between the Masai giraffe and the reticulated or Somali giraffe, zebras, elephants, kudu, Impala, eland, black antelope, baboons, and buffaloes and hippos in the two artificial pools at about 5km from the north of the park.

The park is also a home to 400 different bird species and here a broad range of Savannah species are joined by notable species such as Zanzibar Red Bishop and colorful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated long claw and bateleur eagle during the months of November through to April, May the migrant species join the spectacle.

This is done along the three walking trails which include the Kikoboga, Vuma and Lodge with a total distance of 14kilometers where by the Kikoboga has 4kilometers, Vuma which has 6kilometers and the 4kilometers for the Lodge and the activity takes about 6 hours for the all trails.

HOW TO GET TO MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK TANZANIA

The park can be accessed by road a surfaced route that connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro which is approximately a 4hour drive.
It can also be reached by the route to Udzungwa, Ruaha and Selous which is approximately 283kilometer. And also, the park can be accessed by Air through the use of charter flight from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous.
