18 Days Safari Adventure Uganda & Rwanda – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Explore Jinja – the source of the world’s longest Nile River. Undertake half day rafting and an afternoon boat ride to the source of the Nile

After an early breakfast at your place of stay in Kampala, you embark on the drive to Jinja where the source of River Nile – the world’s longest River is found.

You drive along the impressive forested landscapes of Mabira which is among the major rain forests in Uganda along with the extensive Sugar plantations of Lugazi.

You arrive in Jinja and catch up with the white water rafting encounter along the Nile. The rafting encounter is a magical adventurous experience exploring the tough Nile cascades with the waters hitting the impermeable rocks that have stood on their way for centuries past.

You are guided by the team of experts who would definitely pick you up when the crazy wave washes you off your comfortable raft boat.

Retreat from the half day active adventure and settle for lunch. In the afternoon, you embark on the boat ride to the Source of the Nile.

The cruise offers you impressive sights of the River Nile banks with enticing birds and the site of the source itself is magical as you explore the waters of the Nile rising from down as if they are coming from underground before embarking on the 90 days journey to Mediterranean Sea.

Day 2: Drive to Sipi falls and explore the magical Sipi falls

Transfer to Sipi Falls driving along the impressive scenic landscapes of Eastern Uganda including the flowing streams, extensive wetland system and the rice fields before approaching Mbale and eventually proceeding to Sipi Area.

You check in at the lodge, have and lunch and in the afternoon, you embark on the hike to the Sipi Falls one of the magical wonders in the Area.

Encountering the beautiful waters hailing from the mountains of Elgon and it ridges as they sprinkle down at a distance is as magical as the hike to the site itself.

Day 3: Drive to Kidepo Valley National Park, Undertake a game drive in Pian Upe en route

Transfer to to Kidepo Valley National Park after breakfast driving to the Uganda’s north east close to the border of Kenya and South Sudan.

On the drive, a game drive in the Pian Upe Game Reserve presents a perfect break of this journey. This reserve is among the virgin protected areas of Uganda less explored but with plenty of wildlife and extensive savannah exciting to explore.

The game drive presents possibilities of exploring Civets, Jackals, Spotted hyenas, Leopards, Servals, Wildcats, Vervet monkeys, Olive baboons, Patas monkeys, vervet monkeys, Cape buffalo, Topi, Common eland, blue and common duiker Günther’s dik-dik, Waterbuck, Klipspringer, Ugandan Kob and Bohor and mountain reebuck among other species.

Day 4: Do a game drive in Kidepo Valley National Park and Karamojong Community tour in the afternoon

After breakfast, you embark on early morning drive in the savannah stretches of Kidepo Valley National Park one of the virgin wilderness places on the African continent.

The Park is a home to counts of wild game that are hardly found in any other park in Uganda including twelve species of Antelope like the greater kudu, lesser kudu, mountain reed buck and Guenther’s dik-dik, endemic predators like the black-backed jackal, cheetah, bat-eared fox, caracal and aardwolf and birds like Ostrich.

These species come along side other wild game like Jackson’s hartebeest, eland, common duiker, klipspringer, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, and bohor reed buck, monkey, side-striped jackal, spotted hyena, lion, genets, leopard, mustelids, mongooses and small cats, elephants, Buffaloes, Rothchild Giraffes among others.

The 3 – 4 hour activity offers you a detailed encounter of the park after which you retire back to the lodge for relaxation and lunch.

In the evening, you embark on the Karimojong community tour exploring the ancient heritage of the Karimojong tribal group that is entirely cantered on nomadic pastoralism.

Day 5: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park via the open stretches of northern Uganda infamous for the Kony war that ended in 2006

This is dedicated for your transfer to Murchison Falls National Park driving through the urban landscapes of Kitgum and Gulu along with the extensive open stretches of northern Uganda infamously remembered for the horrific Kony War that was brought to an end in the year 2006.

The remains of the war can be seen along the drive. You arrive in Murchison Falls National Park on the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 6: Undertake game drive in the morning, Nile launch cruise in the afternoon and hike to the top of the falls

The rolling open savannah stretches of Murchison Falls National Park welcome you in this early morning to offer the true wonders of the wild.

The game drive in Murchison is a magical wonder where the herds of elephants and Buffaloes spread in the open landscape for grazing, the towering necks of the Rothschild Giraffes – the world’s tallest mammal stretching to pick the leaves of the scattered acacia, the brownish color of the antelopes including the Kobs, Oribis, Waterbucks, Jackson’s Hartebeest standing slightly above the tall savannah grassland while the Carnivores including the lions roaming in search of their delicious natural given food.

The activity lasts 3 – 4 hours after which you connect back to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. You gather at Paraa Jetty in the afternoon, for the boat departing at 2pm to the bottom of the falls.

The 2 hour launch cruise on the world’s longest Nile River is very magical with possible sights of aquatics like Nile crocodiles, the Hippos, water birds like Shoebill stork along with the grazers on the banks drinking water.

You disembark from the boat upon reaching the bottom of the falls hiking along the narrow path following the course of the Nile River as it clashes its head on the ancient impermeable rocks.

The sights and sounds of the Nile River passing through a less than 7m ravine falling 43m below to what has been termed as the Devils Cauldron forming a thunderous roar marked by a trade mark rainbow. Retreat from the activity and connect to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight. ‘

Day 7: Drive to Kibale. It’s a long day drive via the impressive countryside

Following breakfast, you embark on the drive to Kibale National Park 441km about 8 – 9 hours drive. You enjoy the rich countryside landscapes Masindi, Hoima and Kagadi before approaching Kyenjojo and Fort Portal. Connect to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Do chimpanzee trekking in the morning and afternoon Bigodi wetland walk

After early morning breakfast, embark on the memorable Chimpanzee trekking encounter in the natural habitat of primate Capital of the world – the Kibale Forest National Park.

The Park is proud of 13 primate species including the world endangered species of the Chimpanzees which have been fully habituated increasing the chance of encountering them to 90%.

The chimp trekking encounter in the primates Capital starts at Kanyanchu tourism center at 8:00am local time in the morning and the experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority Park rangers are dedicated to lead you throughout the whole rewarding processes of trekking the Chimps in their natural Habitat.

The trek exposes you to stunning flora, other primate species including black and white colobus monkey and birds before meeting face to face with the chimps.

The Chimpanzees will lure you in a state of amazement as they swing through the branches, make pant hooting calls, play with each other, and imitate your body language along with other features that will make your one full hour with them a memorable experience of its own.

The activity can last 2 – 5 hours after which you transfer to Bigodi wetland Sanctuary for an afternoon wetland walk.

The Sanctuary is noted to be the most successful community tourism initiative in the whole of Uganda with a blend of culture and wetland conservation where a range of primates including Black and White colobus, the Swamp dwelling Sitatunga antelope and 138 species of birds are known to thrive.

The walk can last 2 hours after which you connect to the lodge for relaxation dinner and overnight

Day 9: Transfer to Semliki National Park, undertake the Sempaya nature walk exploring the hot springs.

In the afternoon, you visit the Amabere g’ Nnyinamwiru caves and hike the Fort portal Crater Lake hike or opt for the naming ceremony of the Batooro

After breakfast, you connect to Semliki National Park 78km about 2 hours drive fronted by the Rwenzori Mountains.

Upon arrival, you embark on the Nature walk to the Sempaya Hot springs traversing the verdant forest of Semliki featuring the species of the Congo forest biome.

The lush forest is a rich habitat for birds and other primate species like Black and White colobus Monkeys and Chimpanzees.

The male and female hot springs present a magical sightseeing experience with the water boiling exceeding 100 degrees Celsius and can rise to 2m high.

The pool of hot water can boil the eggs and other plantains thus suitable for your picnic bites. The walk takes 2 – 4 hours after which you retreat back to Fort Portal.

You connect to Nyakasura Area to visit the Amabere g’ Nnyinamwiru Caves to explore the rich heritage attached to it.

The breast-like features are believed in legend to be the breasts of Nnyinamwiru the daughter of Bukuku a self enthroned King of the Bachwezi who succeeded Ishaza following his disappearance.

Bukuku denied his daughter to breast feed her son as he had been foretold that that very grandson would take over his throne.

It is a magical legendary site worth exploring. From the caves, you embark on the hike to the Fort Portal Crater lake field where a range of explosion crater lakes and crater hollows thrive.

The hike to the top of Kyeganywa offers you good scenic views of these lakes and over looking Rwenzori Mountains.

Alternatively in the afternoon, you can opt to attend a Batooro name giving ceremony where the Batooro tribe perform a cultural practice where the children are given the Pet names known as Empaako. Retire in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 10: Drive to Kasese on the foothills of Mount Rwenzori. Explore the Bunyangabu bee keepers, Ruboni community and Rwenzori Art foundation – the only bronze casting center in Africa

After a relaxed breakfast, you drive to Kasese on the foot hills of Mount Rwenzori. This drive will be a relaxed one with several stops for site visits and photography.

A stop is made at Bunyangabu village to explore the bee keeping community learning into the bee keeping process and the use of their products like candle making experience which you can ably participate in.

You proceed on the drive and make a stop at Rwenzori Art foundation – the only bronze casting centre on the continent of Africa exploring a range of sculptures and other art works displayed in the gallery and an opportunity for you to participate in the casting process to gain an experiential touch.

A hot cup of coffee can be arranged at the terrace. From the Art foundation, you visit the Ruboni Community to gain an authentic touch of the tribal communities that have thrived on the foot hills of the legendary Mountains of the moon for centuries past.

The Bakonzo people have inhabited this area for 300 years past and have managed to live a successful life without things like electricity and running water.

Explore the black smith, the local plantations, local houses, the art and craft along with local performances. Retire in the evening for relaxation dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Day long adventure hike to Mount Rwenzori – the legendary mountains of the moon towering to 5,109m above sea level with snowcapped peaks

Gather at Nyakalengija ranger post to set off for the adventurous day hike to the Rwenzori Mountains.

The Rwenzori Mountains also known as the legendary Mountains of the moon rising to 5,109m above sea level is noted to be the third highest on African continent and the tallest mountain range on the continent since Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro are free standing.

The snow caped mountain features impressive foothills and ridges that can be explored in a day hike. The views of the magical glaciers running down the mountain, the montane vegetation, the fauna and birds along with the remarkable views of the rift valley below, Kasese town, the lakes Edward and George among others combine to generate remarkable memories. You wake up early in the morning to transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park 72km about 1 – 2 hours drive and embark on the extensive game drive in the savannah plains of Kasenyi where the magical possible sights of a range of wild game are high.

The activity commences at 7am if you slept outside park and can start earlier for those who would sleep inside.

The game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park presents opportunities for exploring a range of wild game including the Elephants, Buffaloes, Lions, Leopards, Spotted Hyenas, Side stripped Jackals, the Uganda Kobs, the defassa waterbuck, the Bushbuck among other species.

The park features a count of over 600 bird species making it the number one in Uganda in terms of the bird species count.

The game drive lasts 3 – 4 hours after which you retreat to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you gather at Mweya jetty for the 45km long Kazinga Channel boat cruise departing at 2pm.

The cruise lasts 2 hours and offers possibilities of exploring the aquatic species like Nile crocodiles and Hippos, the range of game drinking on the channel side and the birds as well.

Day 13: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Undertake a morning game drive in Ishasha sector in search of tree climbing lions

You embark on the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to the south of Queen Elizabeth National Park and depending on the region where your will be heading; it is 160km to Buhoma, 218km to Ruhija, 309km to the southern regions of Rushaga and Nkuringo.

An en route game drive in Ishasha sector presents opportunity for exploring the tree climbing lions that tend to lie in the fig trees during day time.

The short trees of Ishasha present a clear viewing experience and during the drive more wild game can be explored as well.

Proceed on the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 14: Undertake mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi via the fascinating Kigezi Highlands

You wake up very early in the morning, take your breakfast, pack your lunch, water, cameras, and drive to the Park Headquarters for briefing from the park rangers about the code conduct of gorilla trekking activity.

After the short briefing, you will be divided in groups of 8 individuals and UWA ranger guide will lead you to start the challenging but highly rewarding trek through the impenetrable jungle of Bwindi with its rugged landscape involving steep slopes, valleys, swamps, and rocky areas amidst amazing jungle melodies coming from different bird species which is an interesting experience of its own.

After long distance walk of like 2-8hours, you will finally come across these endangered apes thriving in their ancient natural habitat foraging in group.

You will be given one hour to marvel at the stunning gorillas as they welcome you, interact, take photos of these apes, and finally say bye when your one hour with them is used up.

After that life time experience, you will retreat from the activity to the park head Quarters and embark on drive transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an evening relational boat cruise exploring some of its stunning 29 islands.

The drive to Bunyonyi is backed by the fascinating views of Kigezi Highlands which is among the best sceneries in Africa. Retire for dinner and overnight

Day 15: Do a sun rise boat cruise & Island Hopping and drive to Mgahinga National Park

After a relaxed breakfast, you embark on the thrilling Island-hopping experience exploring the main Islands of Lake Bunyonyi with great heritage attached to them.

The lake features a count of 29 Islands among which include the Up side down Island (Bucuranuka) known to have turned upside down burying its inhabitants after refusing to give an old woman a sip of their prepared local beer.

Others include the Punishment Island where the pregnant girls would be dumped and left to die for getting pregnant before marriage.

Others like Kyahugye and Bushara Island present good nature walking experience. The boat cruise on the lake is also recreational and magical to encounter.

Day 16: Hike one of the Virunga Volcanoes or track Golden Monkeys or do the Batwa heritage trail & then transfer to Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park)

In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, there are three main activity options from which you can choose from.

The 4 hour golden Monkey tracking allows you to explore the endangered species of primate found in the Virunga massif and Gishwati National Park on the world scale.

The 6 hour Batwa heritage trail allows you to explore into the ancient heritage of the Batwa people former forest dwellers including a visit to their Royal Ngarama Cave.

The Volcanno climbing presents an opportunity to hike any of the three Virunga Volcanoes taking 6 – 8 hours of round trip exploring either Muhabura the tallest, Gahinga or Sabyinyo – the Old man’s teeth.

From any of the activities mentioned, you embark on the transfer to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park crossing via the Chanika boarder arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 17: Undertake gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and drive to Lake Kivu – Gisenyi for beach recreation and relaxation in the evening

You gather at Kinigi to catch up with gorilla family allocation and briefing starting at 8am. The earlier arrival offers you chances of viewing the traditional Kinyarwanda performances at the site and enjoying the warm cup of the Rwandan coffee.

After briefing, you embark on the hike through the jungle of Volcanoes whose vegetation is comparably shorter to that of Bwindi and thus has better viewing opportunities.

Apart from the group which dwells on the higher layers of Mount Karisimbi, most of the gorilla families in Rwanda are on lower slopes thus easier to trek.

The gorilla viewing lasts for one hour while the entire trek can last 2 – 8 hours depending on the gorilla movements.

Retreat from the activity and embark on the drive to Gisenyi Lake Kivu 110km about 2 hours drive.

The evening relaxation at Lake Kivu can include swimming, sun bathing, engaging in beach sports, boat cruise among others before dinner and overnight

Day 18: Drive to Kigali and tour the Gisozi genocide memorial

Take a relaxed breakfast at the lodge amidst the fresh air from Lake Kivu after which you embark on the transfer to Kigali 358km about 3 hours drive.

The scenic views of the Rwandan Countryside including the rolling hills that form the background of her dub as the land of a thousand hills will excite you along the way.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you embark on the tour to the Gisozi genocide memorial to explore in detail the tragic 1994 Rwandan genocide where a count of 800,000 people are known to have lost their lives. You can then depart with a late evening flight if you have one.
