Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is located South of the Equator and in the Kilimanjaro Region in Tanzania which is about 300kilometers near the city of Moshi. Covering an area of 1,688 sq km (75,575 ha), the park includes the whole Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line and also the surrounding montane forest belt above 1,820 meters. Mount Kilimanjaro National park with a 3°10’S latitude and 37°10’-37°40’E longitude is administered by the Tanzania National parks Authority (TANAPA). The park protects the largest free-standing volcanic world’s highest mountain in Africa and together with its snow-capped peak, the Kilimanjaro which is a superlative natural phenomenon and standing in isolation above the surrounding plains overlooking the Savannah rises 4877 meters above the surrounding plains to 5895 meters at its peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro and the adjacent forests were declared a game reserve in the early twentieth century by the German colonial government and it was designated a forest reserve in the year of 1921. The mountain above the tree line which is about 2,700 meters or 8,900 ft was reclassified as a national park in the year of 1973 and in 1987 the park was declared a world Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization and later the park was expanded to include the entire montane forest which had been part of the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve in the year of 2005 and the park is protected under the national legislation as a National Park and a management plan is in place.
